NIPIGON BRIDGE

Part of the Trans-Canada Highway THE NIPIGON BRIDGE is a crucial artery for transportation

PDI was contracted by Bot Ferrovial Nipigon Joint Venture to remove the existing 1970’s bridge completely along with the remaining piers from the 1936 structure. A four-lane 
cable-stayed bridge is currently being constructed over the Nipigon River to replace the 
existing two-lane Highway 11/17 bridge. The east-bound lanes of the future structure will follow the existing bridge alignment, while the west-bound lanes will be located to the north of the existing structure.

For environmental mesaures, innovative thinking was required to remove the bridge. PDI along with Western Mechanical decided that rolling the bridge off would be the best tactic.

First the old bridge was jacked-up to install hydraulic drives and roller. A water protection platform was installed and they removed all overhangs and concrete deck on the east side to reduce the structure weight. They then installed king post bracing and began to roll the entire bridge to the west triming concrete and steel every 50' increments until it was complete.
