Description:As part of the Ontario Government's move away from coal-fired generating stations, Priestly Demolition was retained to conduct the soil and groundwater remediation of the former Lakeview Coal Yard. This project included the removal of clean-overburden, impacted soil and groundwater, below grade concrete structures, and miscellaneous buried wastes. Requirements also included the re-instatement of clean-backfill with necessary compaction, sloping, and grading over an approximately 8-acre area to the client's specifications. There was continuous detailed over-sight by third-party environmental consultants. Included, they performed the collection, analysis, and interpretation of numerous soil and groundwater samples to meet the Record of Site Condition needs for the property. Considering the lag-time associated with sample collection and analysis, along with an approximately 50% increase in impacted soils encountered and much more concrete then was initially anticipated, Priestly Demolition was able to complete the job within the original schedule. Throughout the four month period:
Over 27,000 metric tonnes of impacted soil was removed from site
130,000 litres of impacted groundwater was removed and disposed
Close to 3,000 cubic metres of concrete was removed and recycled
Over 13,000 cubic metres of clean backfill was installed, compacted, and graded.
